Speller International are very excited to have recently started supporting The Smith Family, a national children’s education charity that works with children and young people to overcome educational inequality caused by poverty.

The Smith Family supports children at every step of their educational journey, from early childhood through to the completion of their studies. They work with parents and carers as well to help them play an active role in supporting their child’s education.

Speller is excited to participate in The Smith Family’s work and to be directly involved in helping educate and mentor young people about different careers, the pathways to get there, and how to build skills to unlock their true potential.

This week, Judy Cole our Managing Director attended a northern suburbs school to participate in a Smith Family “Job Jump” which saw her, along with other mentors from a variety of industries, engaging with Year 8 students to give them an insight into the world of Recruitment and other careers.

Judy spoke to 11 groups of year 8 students about recruitment, her role, what she likes about it and what she finds challenging. She then took the students through an activity to match highly-regarded skills such as Teamwork, Reliability and Patience with their description and then an example of how the students demonstrate those skills in their everyday life.

These presentations and small group discussions are valuable as they introduce students to meaningful employment activities, and increase awareness of the types of jobs on offer and the different pathways to gain employment in these roles.

Speller hopes to participate in more of these mentorship programs run by The Smith Family. We encourage our staff to think about ways they can get involved.

We are very excited to be supporting The Smith Family: we believe in the work they do and look forward to telling you more and potentially getting you involved in the future.
