About the Role
Our client is planning to transition its on-premise infrastructure from a VMware-based virtualisation platform to a Microsoft-based solution, initially focusing on Hyper-V and potentially Azure Stack HCI. The role involves designing and assessing a Hyper-V virtualisation cluster and, where appropriate, leading the migration of workloads from VMware to Hyper-V. The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience in similar cross-platform migrations, along with strong expertise across Hyper-V deployment models. They will also evaluate the current environment and recommend the most suitable target architecture aligned to organisational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the current VMware-based virtualisation environment
- Design and document a target-state Hyper-V architecture
- Evaluate Hyper-V deployment models, including Azure Stack HCI
- Lead migration planning and execution activities (VMware to Hyper-V)
- Provide recommendations on transitioning from VMware vSAN and hyperconverged storage platforms
- Collaborate with internal infrastructure teams and external technology vendors
- Define migration strategy, sequencing, risks, and rollback approaches
- Support implementation, testing, cutover, and optimisation activities
Key Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with Hyper-V on Windows Server
- Windows Failover Clustering (design, deployment, troubleshooting)
- Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV)
- Live Migration and Storage Live Migration
- Hyper-V virtual switch design and host configuration
- SAN, iSCSI, and enterprise storage architecture
- Networking in virtualised environments (VLANs, NIC teaming, traffic separation)
- Experience analysing and working within VMware environments (vSphere, vSAN)
- MUST BE AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS AND CAN OBTAIN SECURITY CLEARANCE
Highly Desirable
- Azure Stack HCI experience
- PowerShell automation (Hyper-V / Failover Clustering modules)
- VMware PowerCLI
- System Centre Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)
- Backup and Disaster Recovery integration
- Cluster-aware patching and lifecycle management

You are a senior infrastructure specialist with deep virtualisation experience and a proven track record of delivering complex VMware-to-Hyper-V or platform modernisation projects. You are comfortable operating in both architecture and hands-on engineering capacity and have strong stakeholder engagement skills. You will thrive in environments where you can assess, design, and actively contribute to the delivery of enterprise-scale infrastructure change.
