A Year In Review Luke 1140x445

It has been a year since Luke began at Speller International, so today we’ve sat down with him and asked about his journey so far, what’s changed in the SAP world and what are his interests outside of Speller.

Tell us a little bit about the past year working at Speller International and how you’ve fit into the role.

I joined Speller International in June 2018 and came straight into a warm and collaborative environment. For the first couple of months I was really finding my feet in both learning a whole new product in SAP and the process of recruitment.

It was a challenge from both aspects as there is a huge amount of information to take in from the SAP side and then recruitment itself often throws a few curve balls at you too. I can safely say that now, over a year into my engagement, I have really got a strong hold on the niche market that we serve.

In your opinion how has the SAP industry changed over the last year?

SAP seems to me to be an ever-changing landscape, if it is not the modules themselves either progressing or simply changing acronym, then it is the sudden demand for a certain skillset in the market. One thing I have certainly noticed is the focus on cloud technology becoming much stronger and desired.

How has the recruitment world changed in this time period?

Recruitment took me by surprise at first, I had never imagined the amount of work that goes into both sides of this position from taking both good quality job briefs to finding the best matched consultant for the position.

In my time here I have noticed just how much organisations can benefit from using specialised recruitment companies and especially those like us, that have a strict process to follow. There has also been a change in emphasis on having more permanently placed consultants on an organisations book to become more embedded into the business for certain SAP modules.

Has the job role been what you thought it would be, or were there some aspects that took you by surprise?

Fundamentally the job has been as expected however, as mentioned above, the sheer amount of work that goes into qualifying both job role and candidate took me by surprise.

For those who believe recruitment is an easy gig, I would urge them to give it a go themselves. From understanding a consultant’s needs and skills to matching a company’s industry and culture requirements there is a hell of a lot in between that needs to be done correctly and professionally.

What positions within SAP do you predict to be in demand heading into the next financial year?

SuccessFactors shows no sign of slowing down right now so I fully expect to see the demands keep flooding in. Positions within SAP S/4 HANA are likely to increase now that more and more companies are looking into the technology.

What’s in store for you going forward and what are you focusing on professionally in 2019?

I am continually learning and understanding SAP to position myself as both a recruiter and advisor to my clients. Being able to offer the most up to date advice about the SAP market and how to approach certain situations is high on my agenda. Professionally I have set myself some goals to achieve in both acquiring new clients and servicing my extensive current client pool.

What does 2019 hold for you personally? Any holiday’s or big events?

2019 has been a great year for me personally so far. I got engaged to my best friend of 15 years, Luisa. I have recently bought my dream motorcycle; a Harley Davidson and I went to Spain to witness my best mate get married. I think if I don’t now start saving and focussing on my own wedding, my engagement could end up being a short one! So, my main priority now is to get my head down and doing my best to help in the arranging of my own wedding.

Where do we find you in your downtime?

The best place to find me right now is going to be on the road riding my new bike, in the garage cleaning my bike or watching videos on how to further modify it. It has become somewhat of an obsession but that is what I am spending my time on. With summer fast approaching I am sure I will be dragged on some long walks with my partner as she certainly loves to chase the sun!
